Its Professional Flight program, based at Purdue University Airport (KLAF) in West Lafayette, is one of the oldest and most prominent collegiate flight programs in the country, and Purdue's aviation lineage runs deep enough that Amelia Earhart was once a Purdue faculty adviser. For a modern student the practical draw is the Restricted-ATP pathway: a graduate of the Professional Flight B.S. with 60 or more credits from Purdue's FAA-approved course list qualifies for the R-ATP at 1,000 hours rather than the standard 1,500, or 1,250 hours with 30 or more credits, which shortens the time from graduation to a regional first-officer seat. The flight fees dominate the total at Purdue exactly as they do everywhere: the certificates from private through commercial multi-engine and CFI consume aircraft, fuel, and one-on-one instructor time by the hour, and that line lands in the same $60,000-to-$105,000 band that professional-pilot degrees carry nationwide regardless of the university's own tuition. What Purdue adds over a bare Part 61 route is the degree, the R-ATP hour reduction, and one of the strongest airline-cadet pipelines in collegiate aviation.

Indiana State and the lower-cost associate route

For students who want the R-ATP degree pathway without Purdue's private-university sticker, Indiana State University in Terre Haute is the public-university alternative. Its Department of Aviation Technology runs the Professional Aviation Flight Technology B.S. out of a Flight Academy at Terre Haute Regional Airport (KHUF), a Part 141 operation flying a modern Diamond fleet (DA-20, DA-40, and a twin DA-42). Graduates who complete the Part 141 instrument and commercial training and the degree requirements with at least 60 aviation credits qualify for the R-ATP at 1,000 hours, the same reduced threshold Purdue offers, typically at lower in-state public tuition.

Below the four-year programs sits Indiana's associate layer. Vincennes University's Aviation Technology Center trains students from private through commercial-with-instrument, with an optional CFI, at Eagle Creek Air Park (KEYE) in Indianapolis over a two-year associate degree, and its courses articulate into Purdue so a student can start at community-college cost and finish the bachelor's later. An associate-only credential does not by itself earn the R-ATP hour reduction, which requires a qualifying bachelor's degree, so a Vincennes graduate who stops at the associate takes the standard 1,500-hour path, but the on-ramp is materially cheaper than beginning at a private flight university.

Airspace, weather, and cost geography

The honest structural note for Indiana is that the state has no Class B airspace at all. The busiest field, Indianapolis International (KIND), is Class C, and the rest of the state is Class C, D, or non-towered. That keeps congestion and airspace-delay costs down, which is part of why Indiana wet rates sit in the moderate Midwest band rather than the coastal-metro band, but it also means a career-track student who wants realistic Class B radio work and multi-runway sequencing before an airline interview has to leave the state to get it.
