SIU does not fold flight training into tuition. The flight training is billed as a course-specific lab fee on each flight course, and SIU publishes the whole schedule. Standard tuition is charged on top at $327.75 a credit hour, plus a general student fee of $131.50 a credit and a $26.00 textbook fee for on-campus students, which works out near $14,558 a year for a full-time 30-credit load and roughly $58,230 across a 120-credit bachelor's degree in tuition and fees.

The cost feature that sets SIU apart is on the tuition side, not the flying. Since Fall 2017, SIU Carbondale charges every domestic undergraduate the in-state rate, so an out-of-state student pays the same $327.75 a credit as an Illinois resident. That removes the non-resident tuition penalty that dominates the cost gap at a public flagship like Purdue. Required flight-course lab fees (Summer 2026)

These are the per-course flight lab fees for the required professional sequence, from SIU's School of Aviation fee schedule effective Summer 2026. Adding every required course from Private Pilot through Commercial Multi-Engine gives a sequence total of about $78,986.

Instructor-rating lab fees (optional, CFI to MEI)

Most career-track students add the instructor ratings so they can build hours as a paid CFI after the commercial certificate. These are SIU's published lab fees for those courses. Added to the required sequence above, the full run through the CFI, CFII, and MEI ratings sums to about $95,601.

Why the in-state-for-all rate is the cost story

At most public flight programs, the biggest cost variable for a career student is residency: a non-resident often pays two to three times the resident tuition rate. SIU removes that variable for domestic undergraduates. Because every domestic student pays $327.75 a credit, the academic half of an SIU aviation degree costs roughly $58,230 over 120 credits in tuition and fees no matter which state you come from, against Purdue's $28,794-a-year non-resident tuition that alone exceeds $115,000 over four years.

Put the pieces together and an out-of-state career-track student is realistically looking at roughly $150,000 to $175,000 all-in: about $58,000 in tuition and fees, the flight-fee layer of $78,986 to $95,601, plus checkride and testing fees, overage on individual flight courses, and living costs in Carbondale, which is a low-cost-of-living downstate college town rather than a major metro. The R-ATP pathway: 1,000 or 1,250 hours

SIU's School of Aviation is FAA-authorized under 14 CFR 61.159 and 61.160 to certify graduates for the Restricted ATP, and the reduction you earn depends on the degree. A graduate of the Aviation Management or Aviation Technologies bachelor's degree who completes instrument and commercial flight training at SIU and earns 60 or more credit hours from the approved R-ATP course list qualifies for the 1,000-hour R-ATP, a 500-hour reduction from the standard 1,500. A graduate of the Aviation Flight associate degree alone, or a bachelor's graduate with 30 to 59 approved credits, qualifies for the 1,250-hour R-ATP instead. SIU audits each applicant's training records for Part 141 compliance before issuing the certifying statement, and applicants should apply within three years of graduation. Six routes, six cost shapes, and SIU's distinguishing feature is the flat in-state tuition for every domestic student. SIU is the no-non-resident-penalty public option: $327.75-a-credit tuition (about $9,833 a year for 30 credits) with roughly $78,986 to $95,601 in separate flight fees inside a bachelor's degree. Purdue is the lowest-tuition public flagship for residents at $9,992 a year, but charges non-residents $28,794, with roughly $65,000 in flight fees. UND publishes a $104,207 flight total with roughly $11,000-a-year resident tuition. Liberty is the low-tuition private option at about $410 a credit online. Western Michigan publishes an $84,893 flight total with about $16,449-a-year resident tuition. Embry-Riddle is the private-collegiate benchmark, with $45,888-a-year tuition that pushes the four-year sticker above $300,000. The accelerated ATP route is the non-degree fast track: $123,995 zero-time, about nine months to CFI, no bachelor's degree and no R-ATP reduction, so graduates need the full 1,500 hours.
